India’s eastern state of Odisha will set up textile mills in its cotton-producing regions, with a special focus on western districts, state Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi recently announced.

He told a press conference in Sonepur that districts with high cotton production would be prioritised for textile-based industrial development.

Large quantities of cotton are produced annually in Bolangir, Sonepur and Kalahandi districts, but due to the absence of textile mills, cotton from these regions is currently transported to other states for processing, media reports from the state said.

Majhi said textiles are among the 16 priority sectors identified for development.

The move is expected to create jobs, reduce skilled-labour migration, ensure better returns for farmers and strengthen the value chain.
