Azerbaijan's Ministry of Economy has said that more than 15,000 new jobs will be created in the country's cotton sector following a government decision to increase acreage and the announcement of a slew of measures to boost local production and create employment.

In a press release, the Ministry of Economy said that in order to increase interest in cotton production, incentive measures will be implemented, and farmers will be able to use a wider range of preferential loans and leasing services.

Moreover, cotton production and processing facilities will meet the costs of transportation and 90 per cent of production costs will be provided in advance by processors.

Cotton production and processing enterprises increased the procurement price of cotton significantly in 2016 compared to the previous year, it said.

The country has targeted to plant cotton in 30,000 hectares of land (80 per cent more than the previous year), and to supply 70,000 tons of raw cotton in 2016.

The employment in the cotton sector will almost double following the incentive measures and the rise in acreage, the release said. (SH)
