Bangladesh apparel workers protest unpaid arrears, reports claim

Workers from two readymade garment factories in Fatuallah, Narayanganj, recently took to the streets to protest the closure of the factories and pending salaries.

Media reports maintained this adding the demonstration involved several hundred employees of Abanti Colour Tex Limited, an export-oriented factory in the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) area of Fatullah.

Their protest caused traffic congestion on the Dhaka-Munshiganj regional road.

However, the workers later reportedly called off the demonstration upon assurance that the factory would be opened, and salaries will be paid.

Simultaneously, over a hundred workers from Rupashi Group of Industries Ltd, gathered in front of Narayanganj Press Club to voice similar grievances.

The factory located in Fatullah’s Kutubpur area had reportedly been closed since November, leaving approximately 700 workers without pay for three months.

Kabir Hossain Raju, president of the district committee of the United Federation of Garments Workers, reportedly claimed that a minimum of 700 workers from the factory haven’t received their salaries for three months.
