Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) which began work to review its standard, in line with the International Social, Environmental, Accreditation and Labelling Alliance (ISEAL) standard setting code in the spring of 2015, will feature public consultation that started on December 3 and will run till February 3, 2016, it said in a press release.

BCI has invited all stakeholders to participate in this first public consultation and support it in its journey towards improved sustainability standards.

During this consulting period, anyone is invited to read the proposals and background information and contribute their views, expertise and experience. The review will focus on the 7 principles, 51 criteria and 154 indicators. Several aspects related to sustainability developments are being included in the standard review such as land use change, natural resource management and social issues. Additionally, significant changes in the structure of the standard are being suggested.

Over the past several months, BCI has consulted with cotton experts, scientists, advisers, environmental organizations and retailers from its membership to help inform the content of the review. Notably, the BCI Standard Setting and Revision Committee has provided detailed input and designed the current version of the proposed draft. (SH)
