Canada’s prime minister-designate and former central bank governor Mark Carney has vowed to win the trade war with the United States.

Canada will keep its initial retaliatory tariffs in place until “the Americans show us respect”, Carney, who won the race to succeed Justin Trudeau, said.

“We didn’t ask for this fight. But Canadians are always ready when someone else drops the gloves,” he was quoted as saying by global newswires. “The Americans, they should make no mistake, in trade, as in hockey, Canada will win,” he said in his victory speech.

The governing Liberal Party elected him its leader yesterday in a vote with 85.9-per cent support.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who announced his resignation in January, remains Prime Minister until his successor is sworn in in the coming days.

Much of Carney's speech focused on what he called President Donald Trump's ‘unjustified tariffs’ on Canada, the largest trading partner of the United States.

The United States imposed 25-per cent tariffs on Canadian goods last week, but rowed back within days to exempt goods compliant with an existing trade agreement.

Canada responded with retaliatory tariffs of its own as Trudeau accused his US counterpart of trying to collapse the country's economy.

Carney said Trump is "attacking Canadian workers, families, and businesses" and "we can't let him succeed".
