China's power generation increases 2.5% in July 2024

China's power generation saw a year-on-year (YoY) increase of 2.5 per cent in July, reaching 883.1 billion kilowatt-hours, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. This growth rate was 0.2 percentage points higher than in June. Over the first seven months of the year, power generation rose by 4.8 per cent compared to the same period last year.

A closer look at the July figures reveals a mixed performance across different energy sources. Thermal power output experienced a smaller decline, dropping by 4.9 per cent, while hydropower and wind and solar power production showed slower growth rates. However, nuclear power output returned to positive growth.

Among the various energy types, hydropower led the way with a significant 36.2 per cent YoY increase in output, marking the fastest growth rate. Solar power followed with a 16.4 per cent rise, and nuclear power output increased by 4.3 per cent during the same period, as per Chinese media reports.
