China’s energy output was in high gear in 2022, as the country aimed to ensure energy security against an unstable global market. Natural gas output went over 217 billion cubic metres, marking the sixth straight year with an annual growth of over 10 billion cubic metres. China’s coal production was up by 8 per cent year-on-year (YoY), as the country produced approximately 4.45 billion tonnes of coal in 2022.

The country’s crude oil production reached over 200 million tonnes, while the newly installed renewable energy capacity reached 140 million kW, with total installed capacity exceeding 1.2 billion kW, according to Chinese media reports.

The newly installed capacity of wind and solar power went over 120 million kW.

China’s energy sector was also boosted by a total investment of about 2 trillion (about $290.2 billion) yuan by major energy projects. Also, several landmark projects in the country were completed in 2022.

In 2023, China expects to secure an annual natural gas production growth of over 6 billion cubic metres and produce 205 million tonnes of crude oil.

The country’s installed capacity of solar power, wind power, and hydropower could reach about 490 million kW, 430 million kW, and 423 million kW, respectively by the end of 2023.
