Duty-free export of 65 textile items to EU and anti-dumping duty imposed by Turkey on Pakistani textile products were among the issues discussed by Dr. Mirza Ikhtiar Baig, senior member of Pakistan Denim Manufacturers & Exporters Association (PDMEA) with the new Chairman and office bearers of the executive committee of PDMEA for 2011-12.

He suggested that readymade garments should be included among the items for export at zero-duty to China under second phase of Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between China and Pakistan.

Dr. Baig informed the new office bearers that at a recent meeting, the Pakistani High Commissioner to India had informed him that the Indian Government has decided to withdraw its earlier objection to EU plan at the next meeting of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in October 2011. This, he said, would open the gates for export of 65 textile products to EU at zero-duty.

He also spoke to Dr. Asim Hussain, Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources and expressed concern over gas load shedding by Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC). He urged the Minister to discuss the issue of gas supply to the textile industry by attending a meeting with PDMEA members.
