Heavy rain disrupts batik production in Central Java

Incessant rainfall in the Central Java region of Indonesia over the past few weeks has disrupted normal batik production in the area.

Batik production involves drying of batik fabric under the sun to give best results for colouring process. However, heavy rainfall made the sun invisible, leading to an estimated 60 percent decline in the region's batik production.

Usually, a batik producer makes around 60 pieces of batik per week, but the quantity has now decreased to around 20 pieces due to rains.

The non-stop rains have even forced some batik producers in the region to lay-off some of their workers.

Batik producers now pray for the rains to stop and the sun to shine again, so they can get back to drying their batik under the sun.

The Central Java region in Indonesia is famous and well-known for its exquisite batik.
