Around 1,000 workers in Gaza strip have been laid off as power crisis in the region has caused about 100 production houses to cease operations, the Gaza Textile Union said.
The factories and units that closed were among the last residues of Gaza's textile manufacturing industry, which was ravaged by Israel's blockade on the Gaza Strip, Union Chief Muhammad Hamdan said.
Israel's siege caused about 800 factories to remain non-operational for inability to import raw inputs, causing around 19,000 workers to go jobless. The 100 units resumed operations at 20 percent capacity as they succeeded in securing limited supplies via Gaza's tunnel network under the Egyptian border.
However, now this meagre production is also at risk as inadequate fuel supplies forced Gaza's only power station to pull shutters for the third time in a month.
