The year 2012 was not a good year for the Ecuadoran textile sector, especially when compared to the sector’s performance in the previous two years, according to the Asociacion de Industriales Textiles del Ecuador (AITE or Textile Association of Ecuador).

Despite the high cost of raw materials, Ecuadoran textile sector grew by around seven percent year-on-year in 2010 and 2011, but in 2012 the performance was not good both in domestic as well as export markets, AITE said.

Sluggish consumption, rise in imports, high cost of raw materials and difficulties in exports were some of the factors that led to sluggish growth of Ecuadoran textile sector in 2012.

AITE said its exports to both the Venezuelan and the US markets dipped during the year. In addition, there was a decline in procurement of cotton, blankets and uniforms by the domestic public sector companies.

From January to September 2012, Ecuador exported textiles and garments worth US$ 117.3 million, registering a decline of nearly 23 percent compared to exports worth US$ 153.7 million made during the corresponding period of 2011.

To boost Ecuadoran textile exports, AITE has urged the Government to enter into more trade agreements, while providing a policy stimulus and increasing promotion of Ecuadoran textiles in foreign markets.
