Nigerian fabrics are increasingly gaining popularity across the world, as more and more European designers are using these fabrics in their creations for display at several fashion shows.

Nichem prints, tie and dye brocade and Nigerian block wax are some of the ethnic prints, which are used the most by global fashion designers, the Nigerian Ambassador to France, Akin Fayomi, said in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Paris, leadership.ng reported.

Print fabric collections by some of the leading designer labels like Alexander Macqueen, Vivienne Westwood and Mary Katranzhou stole all eyes at the 2013 Spring/Summer Fashion Show in Paris.

According to the envoy, it has now become a routine to organize a Nigerian fashion fair in Paris, where several Nigerian designers showcase their indigenous fabrics and designs.

Nigerian designers are scheduled to participate in a fashion week in Paris in May this year. Though these designers mostly rely on foreign models to showcase their work, the fabrics and styles of their creations remain Nigerian, Mr. Fayomi said.

The participation by Nigerian designers in Paris fashion shows is a positive development as it offers local designers an opportunity to explore global fashion.

He said the embassy would keep supporting the designers and try to provide them a platform to showcase their work and would also make efforts to develop enhanced collaborations.
