Spanish textile sector loses 680 jobs in December

The Spanish textile industry lost 680 jobs during the month of December 2013, according to the average membership data of the Seguridad Social (Social Security) of Spain, modaes.es reported.
 
According to the Ministry of Employment and Social Security, the Spanish textile sector recorded a decline of 1.6 percent year-on-year, with a loss of 680 jobs during the month of December 2013, whereas the Spanish clothing sector lost 2,325 jobs during the same month, indicating a dip of 4.7 percent compared to same period last year.
 
The number of members registered in the Spanish textile and apparel industry (which included leather and footwear), saw a decrease of 0.34 percent year-on-year, during the month of December 2013.
 
The decline in the number of members of the overall Spanish industry was 0.43 percent during the month of December, compared to the same month in 2012.
 
As per the Social Security data, in the year 2013, the Spanish garment industry with a total of 47,532 registered members, incurred a decline of 1.1 percent year-on-year in the self employed category, while the number of members of the general scheme decreased by 5.7 percent, compared to 2012.
 
However, the Spanish textile industry, which constitutes of 41,336 registered members, saw a rise of 2.7 percent year-on-year in the self employed category, accounting for 12.1 percent of the total membership, but saw a decline of 2.2 percent in the number of employees in general scheme, during 2013, compared to 2012.
