In December 2013, Japan produced 621,900 tons of ethylene, showing an increase of 55,100 tons or 9.7 percent compared to the quantity produced in the same month in 2012, as per the data released by the Japan Petrochemical Industry Association (JPCA).

On a month-on-month basis, Japan’s ethylene output in December 2013 grew by 23,200 tons or 3.9 percent, the data showed.

It was the fourth consecutive increase in ethylene production registered.

In December, the real capacity utilization of running plants was estimated at 90.2 percent, which was greater than the 82.3 percent capacity utilization registered in the same month of previous year.

The increase in plant operating rates point to a decrease in imports of petrochemical products and an increase in domestic sales.
