With the aim of increasing competitiveness amongst Brazilian textile firms and strengthening cooperation between local manufacturers and retailers, textile bodies in the country signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) last month.

According to a statement issued by the Brazilian Association of Textile and Clothing Industry (ABIT), the MoU was signed between ABIT, the Association of Artificial and Synthetic Fibres Producers ABRAFAS), Association of Textile Retail (ABVTEX) and the Institute for Retail Development (IDV) at the ABIT office in Sao Paulo.

Rafael Cervone, president of ABIT, said the MoU aims at identifying important issues of common interests and create a platform for textile bodies in the country to work collectively towards combating challenges faced by the textile and retail sector.

It is necessary to strengthen the entire value chain, including retailers, as textile firms and retailers share a relationship of interdependence, and a partnership between the two can help both the parties flourish, he added.

Flavio Rocha, president of IDV, said the manufacturing and the retail sector need to unite in order to develop the textile and apparel sector, and signing the MoU is the first step undertaken towards building a strong textile value chain in Brazil.

Executive director of ABRAFAS Eduardo Cintra added that the textile bodies would work together to develop an institutional framework, under which all the links in the textile value chain would have the opportunity to discuss their issues and seek solutions.

A forum would be established wherein the textile and retail sector representatives would be able to discuss and outline goals for strengthening the chain, and work towards creating a better environment for the local textile and apparel industry, he added.
