A huge global ecommerce market is awaiting the Indian textile sector, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said during his visit to his Lok Sabha constituency of Varanasi.

Speaking after laying the foundation stone of the Trade Facilitation Centre and Crafts Museum, and inaugurating the Powerloom Service Centre in Varanasi, Mr. Modi made a strong pitch for reviving the traditional textile industry and re-establishing Varanasi on the global textile map.

The Prime Minister said the Indian Government has already begun work towards revitalizing the textile sector through a scientific approach, coupled with infusion of appropriate technology.

Mentioning that after agriculture, the textile sector generated maximum employment, Mr. Modi urged more people, especially the younger generation, to join the profession with pride, and not out of compulsion.

Stating that a huge global ecommerce market awaits India’s textile sector, Mr. Modi stressed on the need to take advantage of the opportunity and thereby take Indian textile sector to a global scale.

He reminded the people of Varanasi about the rich heritage of world-renowned Banarasi sarees, and added that a big market is waiting for Banarasi sarees. He said the great legacy of Banarasi sarees needs to be promoted as better brand.

The Trade Facilitation Centre, whose foundation stone was laid by the Prime Minister, would function as a platform for small weavers to directly sell their products to wholesale buyers, removing middlemen and increasing their profit. The centre would also work on design and production of handlooms. (RKS)
