Pune Jewellers' Association on Friday brought an end to the controversy over barring burqa-clad women from entering their stores by apologizing to the Muslim community.

They wanted such permission from the state Government as there had been a rise in thefts by burqa-clad robbers. Their statement was misinterpreted and had sent wrong signals to society. The association express regret in case it has hurt the sentiments of the Muslim community.

All India Gems and Jewellery Federation president Ashok Meinwala also stated that this kind of request was demanded in order to ensure security in the jewellery shops.

About 39 jewellery thefts took place in the city in 2005 of which the police could solve only six, while this year there were 25 thefts and only four had been detected.

A meeting to resolve the security-related problems will take place on January 8 and January 15.
