On January 19, 2007, Japan and Switzerland agreed to exchange dialogues on free-trade agreements.

The decision came after a telephonic conversation between Minister Shinzo Abe and Swiss President Micheline Calmy-Rey, sources informed.

As export tariff to Switzerland is more than 70 percent, this bilateral trade is expected to benefit Japan more.

In 2005, Japan's exports to Switzerland stood at JPY237 billion and imports were JPY557 billion.
