On October 7, wildlife officials in Indian-occupied-Kashmir, set about burning thousands of rare hides and fur garments to dissuade fur traders.

A local court issued a notice, warning traders to obey the wild life protection law of 1997 introduced by the Supreme Court. It also stated that violators who refuse to give up their stock of fur would be liable to six months of jail and a fine of Rs250,000.

Wildlife officials further affirmed the destruction of about 200,000 hides and fur apparels, which would carry on for another week. Most of these hides belong to endangered species like tigers, leopards, martins, jackals, bears, desert cats, lynx, wolves and foxes.

Since the government could not compensate for the losses incurred by the dealers, the issue has been taken to court.
