The international trade-mark, Chyangra Pashmina has been launched by the Nepal Pashmina Industries Association (NPIA) in a bid to bring back the glory of Nepali Pashmina in international markets. This new trademark has been registered in 31 countries across the globe.

During the formal launch of this trademark, the Prime Minister Mr. Madhav Kumar said, this step would prove to be helpful for Nepali pashmina to re-gain its stance in the international market. Also, it is likely to reduce deficit in the balance of payments, he expected.

Pashmina is now established as a typical Nepali product on account of this registration, which now considers Pashmina as a product having well-defined traits and raw material. Nepal has gained exclusive rights over Pashmina products due to this definition and trademark, according to NPIA.

The association expects that the country will witness three times increase in exports to touch over Rs.7 billion, because of this trademark. In the year 2000, export of this product reached up to Rs.7.5 billion from Rs.360 million in 1997 and in the process, expanded its market to around 75 countries.

In 2008-09, Pashmina product exports slipped down to Rs.1.5 billion, as, Indian as well as Chinese Pashmina products started affecting Nepali exports drastically.
