To give a boost to the world-renowned Kashmiri handicrafts, the Indian Institute of Carpet Technology (IICT), Kralsangri has introduced a sophisticated carpet-designing programme.

For this, the IICT has appointed some well-trained designing teachers from outside, informed IICT official.

Moreover, government has established a Craft Development Institute, a satellite Centre of IICT, which would become a full-grown carpet university.

Considering the huge opportunity to manufacture carpets worth 10 billion rupees per year, and the news about training the ambitious designers in Kashmir and enabling them to secure degrees in the trade has been is greeted with great delight, stated Muhammad Ayub, an award winner local designer.

Ayub, who has done his diploma in Hyderabad, is critical of these programmes that should have been started by the Kashmir Handicrafts Department, whom he blames of harming this rich industry.

Ayub added that such trainings have not been introduced and moreover, Kashmir Handicrafts Department has not supported Kashmiri designers by giving suitable placements in the department.

These trainings would help candidates to secure diploma without moving out of the state.

A computer-aided design system would enhance the skills of workers and also increase knowledge about innovtive designs, market research and market intelligence on popular carpets across the world.
