The Papua New Guinea (PNG) government is working to register the Garment and Textile Training Institute (GTTI) as a national apprenticeship and trade testing centre to boost the textile industry in the country. This is part of the government’s commitment to create an environment conducive to the development of small and medium enterprises (SME).
This was recently announced by department of national planning and monitoring representative Betty Nime, according to PNG media reports. Since its establishment in 2002, more than 3,000 participants have graduated from the government-run GTTI, earlier called Women Textile Training Centre, under the SME Corporation. The institute has been training men and women in tailoring and textile-related skills. (DS)
