The Central government has sanctioned Rs 200 crore for textile promotion in the northeastern states, said Union textiles minister Smriti Irani on Sunday. Irani was in Imphal to inaugurate the Apparel and Garment Making Centre in Lamboikhongnangkhong. Cost for installing the centre is Rs 18 crore and it will be beneficial for the state, she said.

The centre consists of one skilling block and two commercial blocks and 300 machines are also installed in the centre.

During the programme, Irani also distributed “Pehchan”, identity cards to some artisans. The scheme that was launched for identifying the weavers on October 7, 2014, has now identified more than 2,000 weavers and issued them identity cards.

As part of the textile promotion programme in the northeastern region, the state awardees will be given Rs 30,000 per month to train weavers, 12 clusters from three districts are selected for design workshop training and trainees will be given Rs 300 per day. Mudra scheme has also been launched for direct connectivity of the weavers so that they can be easily identified for international exhibition. (RR)
