“It was my privilege to do so,” Trump said on Truth Social.
“The Commission President said that talks will begin rapidly,” he wrote.
“Europe is ready to advance talks swiftly and decisively,” von der Leyen earlier wrote on the social media platform.
The development followed Trump threatening 50-per cent tariffs on goods from the EU as early as June 1. Later, EU trade commissioner Maros Sefcovic had said the bloc is committed to securing a trade deal with the United States based on ‘mutual respect’, not ‘threats’.
"The EU's fully engaged, committed to securing a deal that works for both," Sefcovic had said on microblogging platform X after a call with US trade representative Jamieson Greer and commerce secretary Howard Lutnick.
"EU-US trade is unmatched and must be guided by mutual respect, not threats. We stand ready to defend our interests," he had noted.
