Turkiye's unemployment rate stays at 10% in Mar 2023, higher for women

The number of unemployed persons aged 15 years old and above in Turkiye increased by 4,000 to 3,508,000 persons in March 2023 compared to the previous month. While the unemployment rate was estimated 10.0 per cent without any change compared to the previous month, it was estimated 8.1 per cent for men and 13.8 per cent for women.

The number of employed persons increased by 37,000 to 31,462,000 persons in March 2023 compared to the previous month. The employment rate remained at 48.2 per cent without any change. This rate was 66.0 per cent for men and 30.7 per cent for women, according to the Household Labour Force Survey conducted by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat).

In March 2023, the labour force grew by 41,000 people, reaching a total of 34,970,000 individuals; this was an increase from the previous month. The overall labour force participation rate remained at 53.6 per cent and was 71.9 per cent for men and 35.7 per cent for women.

The youth unemployment rate in the 15-24 age group was 20.1 per cent with a 0.7 percentage point increase compared to the previous month. This was estimated to be 15.2 per cent for men and 28.9 per cent for women.

Seasonally and calendar adjusted average weekly actual working hours of persons at work during the reference period was estimated to be 44.5 hours with a 0.2-hour decrease compared to the previous month in March 2023.

The rate of composite measure of labour underutilisation consisting of time-related underemployment, potential labour force, and unemployment was 21.8 per cent in March 2023, with a 1.6 percentage point decrease compared to the previous month. While the combined rate of time-related underemployment and unemployment was found to be 15.1 per cent, the combined rate of unemployment and potential labour force was estimated at 17.2 per cent.
