UK House of Commons votes in favour of Brexit

Inching a step closer towards Britain’s final exit from the EU, the members of the UK House of Commons have voted in favour of The European Union (Notification of Withdrawal) Bill. The Bill now faces scrutiny in both the houses, after which prime minister Theresa May will be able to invoke Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty for formally leaving the EU.

Members of the House of Commons voted overwhelmingly by 498 to 114 to “confer power on the Prime Minister to notify, under Article 50(2) of the Treaty on European Union, the United Kingdom’s intention to withdraw from the EU.”

Article 50(2) gives EU member-states a two-year period to withdraw from the Union. The UK government was forced to bring the legislation before Parliament following a Supreme Court verdict last month, which held that the executive’s prerogative was not sufficient.

The Bill is now provisionally scheduled to be considered in a Committee of the whole House of Commons for three days beginning February 6, 2017.

While both the Labour and the Conservative parties are backing the legislation, Liberal Democrats and the Scottish National Party are opposing the Bill. (RKS)
