  • In FY23, the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) conducted a crackdown on illegal textile imports, seizing shipments of over $129 million and issuing $67.2 million in commercial fraud penalties.
  • CBP's audits identified over $2 million in additional duties owed to the agency.
  • The organisation also conducted 57 international factory verification visits.
In fiscal 2023 (FY23), US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) seized over 5,000 textile shipments valued at more than $129 million and issued around $67.2 million in commercial fraud penalties, according to CBP’s latest textile enforcement statistics. The data reflects robust enforcement efforts that protect American workers and legitimate importers by taking action against unlawful textile imports that attempt to circumvent US trade laws, including those related to US trade agreements.

CBP's robust auditing efforts identified over $2 million in additional duty owed. In the realm of quality assurance, the agency performed laboratory analysis on 323 textile shipments, with 42 per cent being found mis-declared or mis-described upon arrival in the US. Furthermore, the CBP conducted 57 factory verification visits internationally through its Textile Production Verification Team programme, recovering approximately $340,000 in duties and paving the way for potential additional enforcement actions.

In addition to enforcement activities, CBP also offers an e-allegations portal, allowing the public to report suspected trade law violations. In FY 2023, the portal received 30 textile-related allegations, all of which were taken seriously, in line with CBP's mission to protect American industries, CBP said in a press release.
