US' CPI-U declines 0.1% MoM in Dec 2022: Bureau of Labour Statistics

US’ consumer price index for all urban consumers (CPI-U) declined by 0.1 per cent month-on-month (MoM) in December 2022, after rising by 0.1 per cent MoM in November 2022, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. The country’s CPI-U over the last 12 months for all items increased by 6.5 per cent year-on-year (YoY) before seasonal adjustment.

The index for gasoline was by far the largest contributor to the monthly all items decrease, with a decline of 9.4 per cent over the month. The energy index decreased 4.5 per cent over the month as the gasoline index declined; other major energy component indexes increased over the month. The index for natural gas rose over the month, increasing 3 per cent after decreasing 3.5 per cent in November. The electricity index increased by 1 per cent in December.

The energy index increased 7.3 per cent for the 12 months ending December. This increase was smaller than for the 12-month period ending November.

The index for all items less food and energy rose 0.3 per cent in December, after rising 0.2 per cent in November, while it rose by 5.7 per cent over the last 12 months. The apparel index of US rose 0.5 per cent in December 2022.
