The Egyptian government aims to produce 30 million face masks per month as part of its measures to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic and recently urged textile factories to meet the standard requirements and put in applications to receive permission for mass production. Egypt has made it compulsory to wear face masks in public places and facilities.

Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly stressed on the need to produce the highest possible number of reusable cloth masks during a recent meeting with trade and industry minister Nevine Gamea, according to Egyptian media reports.

Gamea announced that over 12,000 small textile factories have been registered by the ministry. Production will begin soon and eight million masks would be produced during the first stage, gradually increasing to 30 million per month through over 100 factories, she said.

Representatives of the textile and readymade garments sector recently met the minister, expressing their willingness to produce cloth masks at $0.31 a piece.
