Indonesian minister of industry Airlangga Hartarto is optimistic about exports of footwear products hitting $6.5 billion this year and reaching $10 billion in the next four years. The sector is being prioritised as an export-oriented and labour-intensive one and trade pacts with Australia and the European Union are likely to expand the export market, he said.

The growth of the leather goods and footwear industry recorded a significant rise of 9.42 per cent in 2018 over 2.22 per cent in 2017. Last year's achievement exceeded the national economic growth of 5.17 per cent, according to news agency report.

The country’s footwear exports also increased by 4.13 per cent, from $4.91 billion in 2017 to $5.11 billion in 2018, Hartarto pointed out. (DS)
