The Kenyan government has permitted the Kitui County Textile Centre (KICOTEC) to manufacture face masks and other personal protective equipment (PPE) to fight COVID-19, according to cabinet secretary for health Mutahi Kagwe, who recently said KICOTEC is among local companies identified to reduce the shortage of protective gears in the country.

Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu presented the samples to Bernard Njiraini, managing director of the Kenya Bureau of Standards, to get the quality standardisation mark, according to Kenyan media reports.

KICOTEC has a capacity to make 1,000 masks per day. The venture comes following passing of Sh 100 million to the county’s health and sanitation ministry by the Kitui assembly to be used to fight the novel coronavirus.
