Tomio Morishita, Chairman, Textiles Council of the Osaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Japan, leading a 14-member delegation, visited Indo-Japan Apparels, a private garment unit in Madras Export Processing Zone (MEPZ)-Special Economic Zone in Tambaram, on Wednesday.
Indo-Japan Apparels is a joint venture of Devi Exports Corporation, India, Mitsui and Company, Tokyo, and Mitsui Asia Investment, Singapore.
The visit was in context of exploring the viability of making India its base to manufacture garments as production costs were high in Japan. Presently many goods were being manufactured in China and other countries for this very reason, said Tomio Morishita.
Purpose of the visit was also to explore possibilities of collaborating with India in order to establish textiles manufacturing units India, as manufacturing costs in China were rising, informed Yutaka Onishi, a member of the delegation.
He further clarified that after visits to manufacturing units of Mumbai and Chennai they were impressed with quality of work and the number of educated and skilled people.
Huge shipment costs and delay in transporting goods from here to Japan can be addressed successfully by increase in trade volume in order to reduce costs, he said.
A.R. Ashok and A.R.M. Ravikumar, Director and Executive Director respectively of the Indo-Japan Apparel and K. Chandrasekaran, Assistant General Manager, lifestyle division of Mitsui and Company India, were also present.
