South Africa imported footwear worth $61.252 million from January to May 2023, accounting for 18.58 per cent of its total footwear imports of $329.651 million during that time. In the same period, imports from China were valued at $182.824 million, making up 55.46 per cent of the total, according to Fibre2Fashion's market insight tool TexPro.
Before the COVID pandemic, South Africa imported a total of $352.565 million in footwear during the first five months of 2019. Vietnam accounted for a 13.75 per cent market share, with imports valued at $48.467 million. Shipments from China were $224.577 million, representing 63.70 per cent of the total. In January-May 2020, footwear imports totalled $252.223 million, with trade from Vietnam at $37.799 million (14.99 per cent) and from China at $160.689 million (63.71 per cent).
In 2022, South Africa's footwear imports from Vietnam nearly reached 20 per cent. They were valued at $200.045 million, accounting for 19.82 per cent of total footwear imports of $1,009.332 million. Meanwhile, China's share shrank to 57.75 per cent, with imports valued at $582.884 million, as per TexPro.
In terms of historical data, imports from Vietnam were noted at $138.489 million in 2021, $113.323 million in 2020, and $139.672 million in 2019.
