Underwear aficionados and lingerie enthusiasts the world over have sent in their votes. The ballots have been counted and the results are in! Women and men cast more than 40,000 votes for their favorite unmentionables by type, brand and style as part of the 2011 Undie Awards. Winners are being announced this week via the awards' website.

Over a one month period, voters of all shapes and sizes anonymously participated in the online awards, which cover bras, panties, thongs, G-strings, boyshorts and shapewear for women, as well as men's t-shirts and underwear, including boxers, boxer briefs, briefs, thongs and jockstraps. The Undies site featured drop-down menus which enabled voters to quickly select their favorite brand and style. Voters also had the option of writing-in their favorite underwear, if it was not listed.

Now in their fifth year, The Undies are an annual awards program designed to provide consumers with a forum for sharing what their favorite undergarments are. The results show a fascinating array of underwear preferences, based on the wearers' ages and body characteristics.

In addition to encouraging voters to nominate their preferred pair for greatness, the awards also seek to introduce voters to brands they might be unfamiliar with, via the 'select' winner categories, which are determined by Undies staffers as a way of highlighting smaller brands deserving of the spotlight.

“Over the past 5 years, I have been fascinated by each year's Undie results. Like the Oscars, there are some predictable winners, but also some terrific surprises,” said Tomima Edmark, lingerie & undergarment expert. “Ultimately, the Undies are a great place for us to track and analyze trends, particularly among women. The first year we launched the awards, the thong silhouette was the runaway choice for most of the ladies. Now, the trend has shifted and more boyshorts are winning votes. It's also fun to see a return to women wearing comfortable 'granny panties.' In the bra category, there has been an increase in sports bra voting in recent years, which suggests that more women are purchasing sports bras. We see this reflected in the variety of sports bras that are now on the market.”

This year's Favorite Overall Bra (Average Figure) is the Timpa Duet Lace Underwire Demi Bra 16449. This bra is a noteworthy winner in its category for many reasons. There has been a good bit of press recently highlighting the trend of smaller breasted women wanting bras without a bunch of padding in the cups. This Timpa bra is a perfect example of that. Made in a fabulous mesh and lace combination with a great low cut neckline, this bra is sexy, beautiful and comfortable. Comes in sizes 32A-38C, but the A cups also fit an AA cup size.

The Favorite Overall Bra (Full Figure) is the Fantasie Smoothing T-Shirt Bra 4510. This will be the third Undie award for this bra, except this time it wins in a new category entirely! Why? Because it really does provide full figured women with great support, allowing for a totally seamless look under t-shirts. This bra is also not full-coverage, so the wearer gets a lighter look. And the leotard back design minimizes back fat while providing additional support.
