Winston-Salem Industries for the Blind (WSIFB), the largest employer of people who are blind or visually impaired in the US, has produced over 24,000 shirts for SustainU, an American clothing company that produces high quality apparel using fabrics made in the US from 100 percent recycled materials.
The partnership is a 'win-win' situation for both the companies. It has helped create five full-time employment opportunities at the Morgantown, West Virginia-based SustainU.
It has also proved beneficial for Winston-Salem Industries as it has helped the company to diversify its business to non-government customers, in addition to providing jobs to blind people.
Until now, Winston-Salem has been supplying only to Government organizations like the Army.
SustainU already has a similar partnership with Grrensboro-based Unifi, under which it uses Unifi's recycled fibre to manufacture jerseys for the Boy Scouts of America.
