US keen to further promote Sri Lankan apparel sector

Sri Lankan apparel industry is set to get a further boost as the US has expressed eagerness to boost its trade and investments in Sri Lanka.

During his meeting with Sri Lanka's Minister of Industry and Commerce Rishad Bathiudeen, Michael J Delaney, Assistant US Trade Representative of South and Central Asia, who is heading a US business delegation to the ongoing 'Sri Lanka Expo 2012', said the US is keen to further boost its trade relations with Sri Lanka.

The US official stated of the expo to be a great opportunity for the Sri Lankan apparel industry to attract US investments.

He said the US consumers of Sri Lankan clothing items are indirectly the single largest employer in Sri Lanka.

The US is the top buyer of Sri Lankan apparels. Around 39.36 percent or US$ 1.590 billion worth of Sri Lanka's overall apparel exports of US$ 4.039 billion were supplied to the US in 2011. This is a significant rise from US$ 1.297 billion worth of garment exports from Sri Lanka to the US in 2009.
