DARPA, the US Department of Defense’s (DOD’s) primary innovation engine, has contracted SoftWear Automation Inc. to create an unmanned sewing machine that counts threads in fabric and automatically stitches as per a computer program.

DAPRA Public Affairs spokesperson told fibre2fashion, “The fully automated cutting and sewing of textiles project is part of a much larger DARPA programme called Open Manufacturing that aims to lower the cost and time required for designing, manufacturing and qualifying military-relevant parts and products, with an emphasis on bolstering the sustainability and reliability of DoD's supply chain.”
