Setting an example of corporate social responsibility (CSR), House of Damaris, an indigenous garment firm based in Ghana, imparted free training in apparel-making to over 300 Ghanaian youth.

The youth were imparted theoretical as well as practical training in various areas like embroidery, knitting, designing and fabric cutting for making garments.

Besides acquainting them with dynamics of the local garment industry, the trainees were also taught how to draft good proposals to obtain funds for setting up their businesses.

Over a period of six years, the House of Damaris has retained around 60 percent of the youth, to whom it has imparted training in batches, to produce clothing items for domestic as well as overseas markets.

The company said the idea behind retaining some of the trainees was to allow them a chance to practically implement what they were taught.

The activity forms a part of the company’s CSR, through which it aims to pay-back to the society what it has received from it. The company provides six-month to one-year free entrepreneurship training to the youth from its own resources.

The company’s Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. Josephine Naana Baiden-Agyarko, who has been bestowed with the Women of Excellence Award – 2012 in entrepreneurship, urged the Government to introduce new policies that extend incentives and motivate the youth to join the entrepreneurial field.
