Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) – the two apex bodies of Bangladesh garment sector have jointly urged the political parties to withdraw their call for shutdown.

The associations have made the plea in view of the call for a day long hartal on April 8 given by Hefajat-e-Islam and a 36-hour strike call beginning the morning of April 9 given by the Bangladesh National Party (BNP)-led 18-party alliance.

In a joint press release, the two associations said the frequent strikes are having an adverse impact on the country’s export-oriented garment sector.

The associations said the frequent strikes hamper their routine and make it difficult for garment manufacturers and exporters to undertake business negotiations as well as to meet shipment deadlines.
