The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) have jointly urged the country’s opposition parties to lift the 36-hour strike call given by them, especially for garment manufacturing units.

In a joint statement, BGMEA and BKMEA representatives said the strike will affect in the rescue and medical assistance being conducted after the collapse of Savar’s Rana Plaza, which housed 5 garment units.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) had given a 36-hour nation-wide strike beginning on the morning of May 8, 2013.

Another call for a day-long strike on May 12, 2013, has been given by Hifazat-e-Islam.

The shutdown of garment manufacturing units will lead to lesser productivity in the sector, the statement said.

A visit of Chinese delegation is also planned during the strike period, which might also be affected, it added.
