People of New York recall the black day when 146 garment workers of Triangle Shirtwaist factory were killed in the fatal fire that took place 95 years ago.
Many victims could not come out of the blazing building as the fire doors were locked whereas others fell to their deaths due to overcrowding of the fire escape. Many immigrant women lost their lives in this blaze.
Labor Commissioner Linda Angello commented that this incident brought forward loopholes in worker safety laws which prompted the formation of New York State Department of Labor on that very day of the incident.
As part of the remembrance ceremony a Fire Department officer rang a silver bell for each of the victims as their names were read out.
