The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has urged European buyers to frame unified code of conduct to bring discipline in the country’s readymade garment sector.

“We want a unified code of conduct for garment industry so that all stakeholders can be brought under discipline for any issue, especially compliance,” BGMEA president M Atiqul Islam said at a press conference held after a meeting with various stakeholders.

The meeting was attended by representatives from the GIZ of Germany, the International Labour Organization (ILO), BGMEA, Ministry of the Foreign Affairs, as well as Ambassadors of several European countries.

Mr. Islam said different buyers have different parameters of inspection, and a unified code of conduct would remove ambiguity and misunderstanding about the standard expected from the garment manufacturers.

"All factories should have same guidelines from buyers," he said.

Mr. William Hanna, Head of EU delegation to Bangladesh, who was present at the press conference, said the European Union is considering a long-time plan for the Bangladesh garment industry.

He expressed optimism that the revised labour law would play a significant role in ensuring the welfare of workers and bringing discipline in the country’s garment sector.
