Lack of designers a concern for Chinese apparel firms

China has only a few world-class fashion designers, and lack of designers in adequate numbers is causing a concern for Chinese apparel enterprises, especially when there is evidence to suggest that a shift is taking place to production of more variety in small batches, from the earlier uniform production in large quantities.

Although China is the world’s leading apparel manufacturing country, it does not top the list when it comes to world-class brand and design, according to experts.

It is because, unlike the French and Italians who view clothing designing as an art, many Chinese people look at garment making simply as a tool to earn money.

If the Chinese apparel enterprises continue to focus on growth of sales of their products, it would become difficult for them to establish brand reputation, according to experts.

For achieving clear brand positioning too, products must be of high quality, hence analysts are suggesting that it is now the time to change for Chinese brands.

In recent times, however, several large-scale garment manufacturing companies have set up their own R&D teams, but they are yet to rise to a very high level of innovation.

In such a situation, more and more entrepreneurs are now recognizing the need to send people abroad and to invest in learning latest production techniques, as it will decide the development of the Chinese apparel industry over the next ten years.
