Peruvian govt to curb low-price Chinese garment imports

Faced with complaints from entrepreneurs of the Gammara clothing emporium in the country, the Peruvian Minister of Production, Gladys Trevino, has announced that the Government would implement control actions on the imports of Chinese garments to prevent undervaluation of goods.

Last week, Peru’s Gammara traders had announced that they would resort to strike on September 5, 2013, to protest against the imports of Chinese clothing in the country.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Production, Ms. Trevino said shutting down trading would not solve the problems faced by garment enterprises owing to import of Chinese garments at undervalued prices.

The Government, through the Ministry of Industry and the National Superintendent of Customs and Tax Administration (SUNAT), is jointly seeking solutions to solve the problem, she added.

The Minister said meetings have been conducted with officials from the SUNAT in Gammara and the customs authorities have been asked to review the existing regulations and assess possibilities to improve the levels of control.

However, Minister Trevino clarified that the corrective measures taken against the imports of Chinese clothing would not be affecting the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between China and Peru.
