The demand for children’s clothing designers is likely to rise in China as more and more brands enter the Chinese kidswear market to get a greater share of the booming market.

Children’s wear market in China is set for explosive growth and the market will reach 100 billion yuan turnover in 2013, states the “Chinese children’s wear industry research report” released recently.

The report states strong purchasing power of parents, new concept of consumption, and the ‘4+2+1’ family structure in cities has led to rapid expansion of China’s kidswear market in recent years.

In ‘4+2+1’ family structure, four grandparents and two parents, i.e. together six parents scramble to pay for a child, and this has led to the growth of child consumer phenomenon in Chinese cities, says the report.

Seeing the phenomenon, several well-known sportswear and adult apparel brands like Li Ning and 361° have started paying attention to children's wear market.

International brands like H&M, Zara and Uniqlo have also jumped into the Chinese kidswear market, thus increasing the competition to get a greater share of the market.

In the first half of 2013, the children’s clothing designers and other jobs remained unchanged compared to last year, according to statistics, but experts predict that the demand for children’s clothing designers will increase exponentially as more and more brands enter the Chinese kidswear market.

According to Zhoushi Kang from Hong Kong Institute of Clothing, at present, a lot of children’s clothing designers are those who have switched to designing clothing for children from designing for adults, due to which kidswear tends to have some functional defects.

For designing kidswear, it is important to understand children’s psychological characteristics, and there is need to systematically cultivate a pool of talented people for designing clothing that meets functional design needs of children, he adds.
