Bangladesh Minister calls for compromise in RMG wages

Bangladesh Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan has called for compromise between readymade garment (RMG) workers and factory owners over minimum monthly wage, during separate meetings with representatives of both parties.

Speaking to reporters after the meetings, Mr. Khan said both sides have to compromise and hinted at further negotiations.

In recent days, garment workers in Bangladesh have taken to streets demanding fixation of their minimum monthly wage at around Tk 8,000.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has proposed Tk 3,600 as the minimum wage, considering the inflation adjustment and industries’ capacity.

Addressing a press briefing, BGMEA acting president SM Mannan Kochi said the apparel makers hope the Wage Board will declare a rational and affordable new minimum wage for the workers by November this year.

The Bangladesh Government had constituted the Wage Board earlier this year to prepare a new salary structure.

The next meeting of the Wage Board is scheduled on October 21, 2013.
