Highlighting the requirement for the country to boost its garment production capacity to fully tap the benefit of increased market access likely to result from anticipated Generalized System of Preference (GSP) Plus status from the EU, Association of Builders and Developers (ABAD North) has offered to set up a hybrid garment park near Lahore, the capital of Pakistan’s Punjab province.

Citing the requirement of setting up small hybrid garment parks across the province as an immediate step to gear up for the looming opportunity, ABAD North Zone Chairman Engr Akber Sheikh has put forward a proposal for constructing a hybrid garment park with estimated export potential of US$ 150 million near Lahore.

The park, proposed to be set up on an area of around 200 acres, would be equipped with 5,000 stitching machines and would employ around 10,000 workers, he said.

In addition, the proposal also contains construction of houses for workers and a scheme to cover health and educational expenses of workers as well as vocational training facilities to them.

Mr. Sheikh, who has earlier served as chairman of All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) Punjab, also offered to help in executing government sponsored garment park projects, to be set up or proposed under public private partnership mode.
