Over 26 Fijian women with disabilities were presented with certificates of attainment in garment manufacturing after successfully undergoing three-month training from Fiji’s National Sewing Center, initiated by the Ministry of Social Welfare and Fiji National Council for Disabled Persons (FNCDP).

According to a statement issued by the Fijian Government, under the project, which was initiated in 2012, the Sewing Centre has so far trained 50 women who have been employed at garment factories with few successfully venturing into small businesses.

Out of the five trainings conducted so far, these 26 women have been the largest group of trainees to graduate from the center. The trainees comprised of single mothers and women living with disabilities assisted by the Government’s social welfare programs.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony, Josefa Koroivueta, permanent secretary of Ministry of Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation, said the trainings are aimed at providing capacity building for Fijian women to become financially independent.

One of the key visions of the Government is to alleviate poverty at all levels in the communities especially for the disadvantaged in the society, and the project aims to uphold individual rights in an income generating approach that would make people self-reliant in the years either at individual, family or national level, he added.

The Ministry of Social Welfare secretary also informed that the Government has plans to build similar vocational training centers in the capital city of Suva to provide technical and vocational training opportunities for women and youths in the country in garment manufacturing.
