The Government of Bangladesh is making a database of readymade garment (RMG) workers which would be completed by the end of this month, Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed has said.

The Minister was speaking to reporters in Dhaka after a meeting of Three-Plus-Five, attended by Labour Secretary, Commerce Secretary and Foreign Affairs Secretary, as well as the five envoys of the US, the EU, Canada, Spain and Netherlands.

The Minister said the Government of Bangladesh has made significant progress in the implementation of the Action Plan, and was optimistic that the country would be able to get back the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) facility in the US.

The meeting also discussed the development of garment industry in accordance with measures suggested by sustainable alliance and accord.

The work of appointment of 200 inspectors for the clothing industry is in progress and all the appointments would be made before March 31, the Minister informed press persons.

Bangladesh has to submit a progress report to the US GSP authority by April 15 this year. Based on the report, a review of the GSP facility to Bangladesh would be made either in May or June this year.

The US suspended its GSP facility for Bangladesh in June 2013 following the April 24 Rana Plaza building collapse which resulted in the death of over 1,100 garment workers.
