Representatives of more than one dozen European brands visiting Myanmar as part of an EU trade delegation organised by SMART Myanmar participated in a discussion with Myanmar Garment Manufacturers Association (MGMA) members on next steps for the MGMA Code of Conduct.

“Input from international buyers was appreciated and generally was very supportive,” MGMA said on its website about the discussion.

Post-discussion, MGMA general secretary Daw Khine Khine Nwe read out a statement on ‘Conclusions on Code of Conduct implementation reached after discussion between MGMA factories and visiting EU brands’.

According to the statement, MGMA agrees to implement continuous activities aimed at implementation of the garment industry Code of Conduct and to be transparent about the process.

Secondly, MGMA calls on Myanmarese government to establish and enforce a consistent policy framework on labour-related laws.

Thirdly, MGMA aims to focus on improving systems rather than just issues.

As per the statement, MGMA recognises that two things can drive improvements in social compliance practices within factories: long-term business relationships and capacity building activities.

The process to put the Code of Conduct into practice was started in 2013, and the code was eventually ratified in December 2014. Subsequently, MGMA voted to put the charter into practice in January this year. As a result, the 300-member MGMA got a non-binding set of guidelines for the apparel industry.

The code touches on sensitive issues like child labour, minimum wage for workers, and compliance. (RKS)
